Cows run loose on Steinbach streets

A day before a Pride march takes to Steinbach’s streets for the first time, a herd of cows ran amok through the city without even a sidewalk permit to their credit.

Reports circulated Friday afternoon of numerous cows entering the city from the east. The cattle dispersed throughout Steinbach, with several police officers, as well as local farmers on horseback, deployed in hopes of corralling about 18 cows. Steve’s Livestock’s Livestock Emergency Unit assisted in the capturing effort.

Eyewitnesses on social media said they saw cattle run across Main Street, Hanover Street and other auxiliary roads.

Ten cows had been captured by 7:30 p.m., said one of the rescuers after seizing another cow on Barkman Avenue, across from Stonybrook Middle School. They did not know where the other cattle were located but it is believed the rest either remained in the city’s east end or fled back.
