STARS kicks off new fundraising lottery

In an effort to raise funds to keep operations going, STARS has created a new fundraiser.
The air ambulance service has created the Lucky STARS 50/50 Lottery with the goal of raising $600,000.
“We think it’s a great opportunity for people to potentially change their life in some way by winning a trip or cash and also an opportunity for them to save lives while they do that so it’s a win-win. Every ticket goes towards ensuring we’ll be there for the next patient who needs us across Manitoba,” said Mark Oddan, program manager for lotteries and fundraising initiatives with STARS.
Since first establishing itself in the province in 2009, STARS has flown 9,000 missions in Manitoba.
“The need is strong, unfortunately. But we’re glad that we can be there to meet it. We average about two missions a day in Manitoba and there is a need,” said Oddan.
Oddan said it costs about $11 million a year to keep the Manitoba base running and while it gets money from the provincial government, it still needs money from the general public to keep operations flowing.
“We often say we’re built by the community for the community whether that’s fundraisers that STARS puts on, or the community puts on, or an individual donation, or service club fundraiser and donations, we’re grateful for all of it and it’s all needed. The lottery is one new way in which we hope to be able to help with that fundraising in the province.”
Tickets for the lottery are two for $10; 10 tickets for $25; 50 tickets for $50; or 250 tickets for $100. The early bird prize is a trip for two to Honolulu, Hawaii or $6,500. Oddan said the early bird draw is not a separate draw requiring a separate ticket from the 50/50. All tickets for the early bird draw need to be purchased before Dec. 12. Tickets for the 50/50 can be purchased until Dec. 31.
