People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier’s court case regarding his June 11 arrest has been pushed back for the third time to allow for further disclosure between lawyers.
Jessie Brar spoke on behalf of Bernier’s defense lawyer Alex Steigerwald on Sept. 21 in St Pierre court to request more time for discussions with crown prosecutor Valerie Hebert. Judge Alain Huberdeau granted the one-month extension to Oct. 26.
Bernier was arrested in St Pierre in June for contravening public health orders during a set of rallies across southern Manitoba calling for COVID-19 public health orders to cease, dubbing the lockdown measures “draconian.” He was arrested and charged for holding an outdoor gathering above the allotted number of people and failing to isolate upon entering the province.
None of the charges have been tested in court.
Earlier this month Bernier made a stop in Steinbach to attend a PPC campaign event which he spoke on many of the same topics. He was not fined during his visit.
