By the slimmest of margins, Steinbach Regional Secondary School now has the second-most students of any school in Manitoba.
The Steinbach high school counts 1,731 students as of Sept. 30, one more student than Maples Collegiate in Winnipeg recorded on that same date: 1,730.
These enrollment totals will fluctuate for both schools regularly, which means whenever the moving van wheels into either of these schools’ catchment areas it may affect which school is ranked second.
Sept. 30 is the date the province uses to fund each school based on enrollment.
The province’s most populated remains Sisler High School in Winnipeg. The school tallies 1,890 students.
SRSS was ranked third a year ago when they counted 1,522 pupils, its first year offering Grade 9. The major explanation for this fall’s boost is the permanent influx of Grade 9 students from four surrounding rural communities that no longer offers the grade. This year that equates to 167 students from Mitchell, Blumenort, Kleefeld and New Bothwell.
