The St Malo Warriors were in tough in the opening stages of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League finals.

Game one was a tight-checking affair, with the teams combining for only 29 shots in the second and third periods. Xander Delaronde’s unassisted goal with five minutes to go in the third period would hold up as the winner in a 2-1 final.

For as tight as game one was, game two was even closer. The Warriors lost a marathon in St Malo, with Raymond Hefferman scoring in the third overtime period to give the Fishermen a 4-3 win and a 2-0 series lead.

Teagan Fillion’s goal in the third period forced overtime, before goalies Brendon Hocaluk and Jozsé Gauthier-Urmos put on a clinic. The two combined to stop 53/54 shots across overtime, before Hefferman’s powerplay marker ended the game.

St Malo would finally get on the board in game three, picking up a 3-2 win in Selkirk March 26. The Warriors scored once in each period, with Brady Gregoire’s fifth of the playoffs the difference.

The Warriors had taken 1-0 and 2-0 leads, but Selkirk was able to even up the game both times. Gregoire’s winning goal came on the powerplay, as the forward let loose a wicked wrister from the faceoff dot to beat Owen Derewianchuk, who got the start for Selkirk.

Game four of the series is set for St Malo on March 31, with puck drop at 8 p.m. Game five will be the next day in Selkirk at 7:30 p.m. The series will pick up the weekend after if neccessary, as the teams are set for another Friday and Saturday night games.

If a game six is needed it will be on Good Friday, April 7, in St Malo, with a game seven scheduled for the next day in Selkirk.
