Few schools can boast such a dominant performance in any given year than the Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys in volleyball this season.

The Ile-des-Chenes-based school picked up both the girls and boys varsity AA banners, adding onto a two-level jump AAAA junior varsity championship just a week ago.

The varsity boys made it look easy during the provincials, hosted at their home gym. Les Roys didn’t drop a single set, en route to the championship, going a perfect 7-0, defeating the Major Pratt/St Lazare co-op team 2-0 (25-18, 25-20) in the final.

The championship clinching set was the closest chance any team had at taking a game off of the boys. In pool play, no team even scored 20 points against Gabrielle-Roy them in a set.

With such an outstanding performance, there was no doubt the tournament’s most valuable player award would go to a Les Roys player, as Maxime Vermette picked up the honours.

Joshua Bartlett and Zacharie Giroux were named tournament all-stars as well.

The girls varsity team was nearly as dominant during their tournament win in Lac du Bonnet. They also posted a perfect 7-0 record to win the tournament, only dropping a single set to Major Pratt in pool play.

It was a convincing performance throughout the weekend, as Les Roys knocked off Warren 2-0 (25-20, 25-18) in the final. Bethany Carter was named the tournament’s most valuable player, with Raihanna Laarissa and Katrine Ferguson picking up all-star nods.

In other non-AAAA action throughout the province, the Pointe-des-Chenes Cavaliers couldn’t manage to break the quarterfinals at the boys varsity A provincials in Fisher River. The Cavaliers lost to the Elm Creek Cobras, with the decisive set a 30-28 marathon.

The AAA level saw the Neelin High School Spartans sweep the boys and girls banners.

On the boys side, the Spartans went through all three of the region’s schools on their championship path, knocking off the Springfield Sabres and Steinbach Christian School Flames in pool play, before defeating the Niverville Panthers in the quarterfinals.

The Flames, who were the number one ranked team in the province heading into the tournament, had another shot at Neelin in the finals, but came up short, losing 2-0 (25-18, 25-22).

At the girls’ provincials, Nivervile were felled by Altona’s W.C. Miller Aces in a qualifying match.
