Long time columnist dies

Journalist and long time columnist Jim Rae died Feb 2 following an accident.

The author of Accent on Agriculture has been a fixture in The Carillon for 27 years, writing an estimated 1,400 columns during that time for many rural newspapers.

The 83-year-old journalist is a former on-air reporter for CBC radio beginning with the role of farm commentator in 1966. He hosted the CBC call-in show called Questionnaire, and worked for CBC until 1996.

Rae was also very involved in community and charitable organizations including the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, the Misericordia Hospital Foundation, Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba, St Andrews River Heights United Church board, the Manitoba Farm Writers’ Association, the Manitoba Community Newpapers Association and the Rock Steady Boxing Club where he participated in classes twice a week up to his passing.

A private family service has been held with a celebration of life planned for St Andrews United Church in Winnipeg on Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
