Time to nominate someone for a King’s Coronation Medal is running out.

Provencher MP Ted Falk issued a press release Tuesday, reminding the public that they can make nominations until Sunday.

The medal commemorates the coronation of King Charles III as King of Canada.

This year, 30,000 medals will be awarded, of which 4,000 will recognize members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Falk said in the press release that eligible civilian candidates must have made significant contributions to their country, province, territory, region or community or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.

They also must have been alive on coronation day, May 6, 2023. The award can be made posthumously.

“We have so many worthy individuals in our community,” Falk said. “A while back we did the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal and recognized 50 people who made huge contributions to our community. I’m sure we’ll see more with this new honour.”

The medals are designed by the Canadian Heraldic Authority at Rideau Hall and will be manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Made from nickel, sliver in colour, they feature a crowned and robed effigy King Charles with the inscriptions “CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX” (by the grace of God) and “CANADA”.

On the reverse sign is a background of frosted triangular shapes evoking the image of a string of pennants displayed for a celebration. The 13 shapes allude to Canada’s provinces and territories, and their circular arrangement is intended to convey the idea of inclusion for all Canadians. Over this background appear the Canadian Royal Cypher I the centre, the date of the Coronation on the left and the words “VIVAT REX” (long live the king) on the right.

The ribbon is red, white and blue, inspired by King Edward VII’s coronation medal ribbon from 1902, the first to be suspended from a ribbon.

Nominations can be made to the directorate of honours at Rideau Hall or through your local MP.
