While the Steinbach Sabres are re-gaining their footing after a crazy start to the schedule, the Springfield Sabres are looking to hang tough in the North East Conference of the Winnipeg High School Football League.

Springfield dropped their first game of the season Sept. 28, when they hosted last year’s league finalists, the Grant Park Pirates.

The Sabres went toe-to-toe with the Pirates, until a quarterback keeper went over 50 yards to the end zone. While Springfield’s defense appeared on par with Grant Park’s offense at times, their offense couldn’t find any sustained success, as Grant Park came away with a 28-0 victory.

Steinbach fell to Grant Park 35-14 earlier this season after battling last year’s league finalists to a first half 14-14 tie.

Springfield could only muster 115 total yards gained according to the league’s website. Korben Meadows-Seidler lead the team with just 29 yards rushing.

The Oakbank-based school is still looking solid in the North East Conference standings. They’re in first place ahead of River East, with a plus-55 point difference. The Sabres are the only team in their conference with a positive point difference.

River East and Springfield will face off in the Sabres’ final home game of the season Oct. 18 in Oakbank.

The Steinbach Regional Secondary School Sabres pounded the run game to the tune of a 56-13 victory over Kildonan East Sept. 27.

Josiah Griener and Wade Anderson combined to rush for over 250 yards and four touchdowns on only 19 carries. Quarterback Toby Plett chipped in with two passing touchdowns of his own, only needing to throw the ball 12 times.

On defense, three players nabbed an interception on the day. The team’s leading tackler was Juddah Wohlgemuth, who stopped the ball nine times.

Steinbach is back in action Oct. 3, when they travel to Kelvin for a South East Conference match-up.

The school’s junior varsity team played Stugeon Heights Oct. 2, with the score unavailable at press time.
