The Grunthal Arena is one step closer to completion thanks to fundraising efforts by the community.

“The Grunthal arena renewal project is moving into the next phase of development. Fundraising committee has been going strong for the last year. We’re around $1.2 million raised (of the) $2 million target and the $1 million stepping stone was the catalyst to move into the design phase,” said Coun. Curtis Dawydiuk, who sits on the committee.

It will cost $4.5 million to upgrade the arena with $2 million coming from the community and the rest coming from local and provincial governments.

Submitted by RM of Hanover The Grunthal Arena is expected to cost $4.5 million and will include many upgrades such as new bathrooms, new change rooms, a new lobby, and a new canteen.

The arena will expand by 9,300 sq.ft. The design phase will see the addition of four player dressing rooms, a referee dressing room, a new canteen and lobby area, improved and more accessible seating, and new washrooms.

“The term arena instantly makes people think of ice sports but its more than that,” said Dawydiuk. “It’s the center of our community.”

Dawydiuk said while there are a lot of ice sports played in the arena there is also a growing pickle ball program. “With the new design there will hopefully be opportunities for other rentals in the lobby area as well.”

To keep the fundraising train going, the community is holding a concert fundraiser at the arena on April 26. Comedian Matt Falk will entertain as will bands The Good Ol’ Boys and The Dumpster Fires. Food trucks will also be on hand for those who want to try something new. The show starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available at Grunthal Lumber, Grunthal Grocery, and the RM of Hanover office.

“That’s a lot of entertainment for $25,” said Dawydiuk.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
