High school volleyball playoffs roll on

The action has been hard and fast across the region, as the region’s schools attempt to qualify for their respective provincial championships.

The A and AA Zone 13 banner-winners have been decided already, with AAA championships set for Nov. 18. The Girls championship will be hosted in Lorette, with the boys in Beausejour. A pair of play-in matches took place Nov. 13 after press time.

The Real Berard Jaguars went into Ste Anne and defeated Pointe des Chenes in straight sets (25-14, 25-15) to lock up the girls A banner Nov. 6. The Jaguars are playing in a provincial qualifier at Rivers Collegiate Nov. 16, needing to finish in the top half of a four-team tournament to advance to provincials.

Down the road in Ile des Chenes, Gabrielle-Roy came out on top of the AA final the same night, handling Green Valley in straight sets (25-17, 25-12) to lock up the AA banner. Les Roys will be hosting a provincial qualifier of their own Nov. 16, looking to advance to provincials.

Green Valley took out Sagkeeng before defeating Landmark (25-21, 25-22) in the boys AA final. The Pirates will be in Forrest to try and lock up their spot at provincials.

Landmark still has a chance to qualify for provincials, as they’re heading to Rosenort to try and advance.

The AA Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association provincial volleyball finals will be hosted in zone 4 this year, with the girls heading to Dominion City and the boys to Morris.

In Oakbank, the varsity boys Springfield Sabres are battling to advance in the Kilcona Peguis Athletic Conference (KPAC) playoffs. The Sabres finished second in the league standings and defeated Calvin Christian 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-19. 25-19) Nov 6. They play a semi-final against Garden City after press time Nov. 13. The KPAC Tier 1 finals are set for Nov. 15.

In AAAA action, Steinbach Regional Secondary School’s varsity boys and girls teams picked up playoff wins over the Windsor Park Royals Nov. 8.

The South Central Athletic Conference playoffs continued with the Sabres hosting Dakota Nov. 13 after press time.

The school’s junior varsity teams also hosted playoff matches this week, with the boys team defeating Dakota 3-1 and the girls dropping Northlands Collegiate in straight sets Nov. 12. The junior varsity boys are playing Jeanne-Sauve Nov. 14.

Gabrielle-Roy’s varsity boys are competing at a AAAA level this year. Les Roys have been placed as high as fourth in the provincial power rankings this season.
