All the Providence Pilots women’s soccer team needed was a goal to advance into the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association division 2 finals, but they couldn’t find it, getting knocked out by fellow North Region qualifier Great Lakes Christian College in the group stage.
The Pilots defeated Randall University 2-0 in their first game of the tournament. With Great Lakes beating Randall 4-1, Providence was in must-win situation heading into their final group stage game due to goal difference.
As Great Lakes only needed a draw to advance, the Pilots poured forward, recording 14 shots on goal and six corner kicks, but their opposition stood tall to squeeze out the 0-0 tie they needed to advance to the final. Keeper Malia Fray was a star, denying several great chances from Providence attackers.
Great Lakes would fall in the final 5-0 to the South Carolina-based Bob Jones University Bruins, which racked up an impressive goal difference in the championship, finding the back of the net 21 times while not conceding a single goal.
Providence’s Samantha Moffit, Sarah Friesen, and Emily Eskiw were recognized at the NCCAA division 2 banquet for their academic efforts as student athletes and Ava Temple was named to the all-tournament team.
