The best young hockey players from across the province are gathering in Winnipeg, as Hockey Manitoba hosts camps in the coming week as part of their Program of Excellence.
The top U18 female players and U16 boys will be at the Hockey for All Centre trying to impress scouts and make Team Manitoba for upcoming events.
The second-phase girls camp will take place July 4-6, with 40 players invited. The next stage of the program will have Team Manitoba play the University of Manitoba Bisons in a series of exhibition games this fall.
“(The program) is designed to provide high performance female players with the opportunity to develop advanced skills as well as an introduction to the concepts needed to play at an elite level,” a news release sent out along with the top-40 roster reads.
“Players from the Program of Excellence go on to play at the U Sport, NCAA and International level.”
Included at the camp are defender Addilyn Nohlgren, goalie Addison Tomes and forward Sophia Heidinger, all from the Eastman Selects.
Linnea Misner, who is from Cooks Creek and plays for the Balmoral Hall Blazers prep team, was also invited to the camp.
The male camp is in a different format, as Manitoba prepares to compete at the 2024 WHL Cup, set to take place Oct. 22-27 in Alberta.
Only 23 players will be invited to a pair of camps this summer, taking place in Winnipeg July 10-11 and Aug. 12. The team will then play a series of exhibition games in Winnipeg against top AAA and academy programs in preparation for the WHL Cup.
Oakbank’s Madden Cooke-Tymchak, St Adolphe’s Graeme Pickering, Steinbach’s Asher Gingras and Mitchell’s William Picklyk all were named to the July camp’s roster.
