The annual food drive hosted by local church youth groups is about to take place.

Organizer and Grace Mennonite Church Pastor Kyle Penner said this year they have youth groups from 11 churches taking part.

That’s an estimated 300 plus volunteers who will take part in the door-to-door campaign to collect food for South East Helping Hands.

Past years has seen the group collect over 10,000 pounds of food annually.

“We love ensuring there is enough food for everyone in our community,” Penner said. “We love teaching our youth that when we have enough to share, rather than build a bigger wall we should build a bigger table.”

Penner added that youth are excited to take part as this is a tangible way they can help the community.

It’s also a favourite among youth group leaders who can take part in this annual lesson and see the excitement generated from local generosity.

This year the food drive will take place over four days, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Steinbach, Mitchell and Blumenort.

Door hangers will be hung on doors a few days in advance to let homeowners know when their pickup day is.

People are asked to donate non-perishable items only.
