The Rosenort Redhawks rode a hot serving hand to nab the AA boys varsity volleyball provincial championship in hostile territory Nov. 30.

The Redhawks matched up against the host and fellow Zone 4 school Morris/St Jean Mavericks in the final and managed to overcome the crowd for a three-set (25-16, 22-25, 15-3) victory.

Their wins in the first and third sets were powered by AJ Peters, whose booming serves to start each set gave Rosenort nearly insurmountable leads in both sets. Peters was named a tournament all-star.

Mavericks Nicolas Leflar and Tanner Manning were named tournament all-stars as well, with Redhawk Tristan Manning nabbing tournament most valuable player honours.

The Redhawks also won the AA boys volleyball championship in 2021. Morris hasn’t won a provincial boys volleyball championship since 1976, and haven’t nabbed a provincial banner since the 2010/2011 hockey season.

Rosenort just missed out on a AA sweep, with the host Redhawks falling to the Elton Sabres in the AA girls final. The Sabres took down top-seeded Gabrielle-Roy in the semi-finals in three sets (17-25, 25-19, 15-9), before squeaking by in straight sets in the final (26-24, 26-24).

Grunthal’s Green Valley School lost in the quarterfinals.

The Redhawks’ Ryleigh Schellenberg and Emily Waldner were named tournament all-stars, with Gabrielle-Roy’s Abbie Parker joining them. Les Roys won the third-place match in straight sets over Prairie Mountain.

At the AAA varsity provincials, hosted in Winnipeg at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, none of the region’s teams could break into the semi-finals.

In the girls tournament, the Lorette Scorpions were defeated in three sets by Balmoral Hall despite winning the first set (23-25, 25-6, 15-13). Altona’s W.C. Miller Aces beat Balmoral but were defeated in the semi-finals by Stonewall. The host Westgate Wings won the tournament.

On the boys side, three teams from the region were in the running, but none could advance beyond the quarterfinals. The Niverville Panthers were defeated by Calvin Christian in straight sets in the quarterfinals (25-22, 25-15).

Steinbach Christian were topped by the John Taylor Pipers in the first round of knockout matches, while the Springfield Sabres went win-less in pool play. The Neelin Spartans would take home the banner.

No team from the region made it to the A provincials, which were won by Elm Creek (boys) and Gilbert Plains (girls).
